Dry Lips and Chapped Lips

Dry skin results when the moisture content of the skin is reduced. Lips that are chapped may show the following qualities; roughness, dryness, redness, peeling, cracking and sensitivity. As a person's lips are often exposed to heat, sunshine, wind or cold air, the lips may become irritated before other parts of the body do.

Dry Lips Causes

Chapped lips are the result of diminished moisture in the skin on and around the lips. In most cases, chapped lips are caused by the elements. Dry, swollen, or cracked lips can also be caused by allergies, infections, drugs, and a number of medical problems. Macrocytosis, Riboflavin deficiency, Sjogren's syndrome, Frequent use of soaps and other chemicals, Deficiency of vitamin A, B and C, Smoking, History of skin disorder When the lips are chapped or dry do not attempt to lick them, this will make you feel better only for short time.

One of the major causes of dry lips is sun damage which can occur even when it's cloudy and you're not in bright sunlight. That means during the day a well formulated emollient lip balm, lip gloss, or lipstick with an SPF 15 of greater with the UVA protecting ingredients of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone is vital.

Chapped Lips Symptoms

Chapped lips often look dry, red and feel painful. Lips can also crack, split and bleed. The pain is often continuous, but it can intensify when lips come in contact with moisture or some foods.

Chapped Lips Treatment

One of the things that many people do when their lips feel dry is to moisturise the lips. In most cases, however, this doesn't solve the problem but makes matters worse.

At night, after cleansing your face, apply a thick layer of an emollient lip balm (even a very thick emollient lip gloss can work well). Do this every night as part of your nightly skin-care routine and you will be thrilled with the difference in how your lips look.

Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly. You can also try coating your lips with skin moisturizer, vitamin E oil or aloe vera gel. These greasy products help keep your lips properly moisturized.

Remembers that cracks are at the corners or around the mouth can the indication of lack of riboflavin, therefore, take supplements of vitamin B-2 to treat it.

Use a humidifier to moisturize the air in your home, helping to prevent both dry lips and skin.

Use an oil-based lubricating cream, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment, or lip balm containing petrolatum or beeswax.
