Disability Discrimination Act(DDA) was passed in 1995. This legislation does not cater to education related discrimination. Though, staff employed at educational institutes comes under the remit of Discrimination act, provision and access of education for the disabled learners was not covered under the act. As a result of it, thousands of disabled students were not allowed in the educational institute and discriminated and excluded.
This issue has been noticed by the authorities and addressed via the SENDA(Special Educational Needs Disability Act) of 2001, which allows disabled learners to join the mainstream education. This marks the start of new changes in terms of recognition of discrimination against the disabled as unlawful and not acceptable.
From August 2002, the teachers and others who are involved in providing education in schools and other high education institutes are required to ensure that disabled students are treated equally as normal students in every aspect of education. Also, they should ensure that disability are not treated less favourably in any way and they must make steps to ensure that disabled students do not have any disadvantage of any kind against the normal students. The teachers are required to address all such circumstances
Apart from the above measures, educational institutes should provision to improve the accessibility of environment, information and courses for disabled learners. Providers of education must regularly monitor the practices, procedures and policies to ensure compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act
