Fibroadenoma

Fibroadenoma of the breast is a benign tumor characterized by proliferation of both glandular and stromal elements.Fibroadenoma is a smooth, rubbery or hard lump that moves easily within the breast tissue. It is most often found in teenagers and younger women. Black women tend to develop fibroadenomas more frequently and at an earlier age than white women.Fibroadenoma is typically not cancerous. They are the most common benign lumps that occur in women and can occur in women of any age. Increasingly, they are being seen in postmenopausal women who are taking hormone replacement therapy. The painless lump feels rubbery and moves around freely and very often is found by the woman herself. They vary in size and can grow anywhere in the breast tissue. Fibroadenomas are benign tumors composed of stromal and epithelial elements. These tumors are commonly seen in young women. Fibroadenomas between 1-3cm in size are referred to as 'common', those growing to more than 5cm in size are known as 'giant', and fibroadenomas found in teenage girls are called 'juvenile'.

Fibroadenomas may indicate a slightly increased risk for breast cancer; risk of patients with such fibroadenomas is approximately twice that of patients of similar age without fibroadenomas. Fibroadenoma variants include juvenile fibroadenomas, occurring in female adolescents, and myxoid fibroadenomas, occurring in persons with Carney complex. Carney complex is an autosomal dominant neoplasia syndrome that includes skin and mucosal lesions, myxomas, and endocrine disorders. The cause of breast fibroadenomas is unknown. They may be dependent upon estrogen, because they are common in premenopausal women, can be found in postmenopausal women taking estrogen, and because they grow larger in pregnant women. Fibroadenomas usually cause no symptoms and may be discovered during breast self-examination, or during a routine check-up.
